SUMMARY: A shooting at the Dick’s House of Sport inside the Brandon Exchange Mall on Friday afternoon left one person dead in a fitting room. Authorities responded to the scene at 4:28 p.m. and quickly detained two individuals in the parking lot who were seen running from the area. The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating the incident and executing search warrants.
BRANDON, Fla. – A Friday afternoon shooting inside Dick’s House of Sport at the Brandon Exchange Mall left one person dead inside a fitting room and two others in police custody.
The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office rushed to the scene immediately after receiving emergency calls regarding gunfire at the shopping center.
The incident began around 4:28 p.m. when an employee dialed 911 to report that they had discovered a person suffering from a gunshot wound inside one of the store’s fitting rooms. Emergency responders located the victim at the scene, but the individual was pronounced dead.
As detectives began reviewing the store’s interior surveillance footage, they spotted three individuals walking together into the Dick’s House of Sport and heading directly toward the fitting rooms. Moments later, right around the time the initial 911 call was placed, the video captured only two of those individuals running out of the fitting room area and heading straight for the exterior parking lot.
Deputies arriving at the mall intercepted the two fleeing individuals in the parking lot and took them into custody. Investigators are currently working through search warrants to gather more evidence from the scene and piece together the exact sequence of events that led up to the gunfire.
At this stage in the investigation, authorities have not released the names or identities of the deceased individual or the two people who were detained.
The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office could not confirm the exact number of shoppers or staff members who were inside the store when the shots were fired. However, officials confirmed that all store employees are safe and noted that the Brandon Exchange Mall was not shut down during the law enforcement response.
