A massive Independence Day gathering of hundreds of youth turned deadly in Pensacola, Florida, early Sunday morning, leaving a 19-year-old man dead and six other people injured.
The crowd, which included children as young as middle schoolers, had gathered on Saturday evening as Fourth of July celebrations were underway. According to the Pensacola Police Department, the situation escalated into violence around 1:20 a.m. when multiple gunshots were fired.
Nearby officers responded immediately, running to the scene to administer first aid to the victims. A 19-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not yet released his identity. The six other victims, ranging in age from 16 to 26, sustained injuries but are expected to survive.
Pensacola Police Chief Eric Winstrom stated that investigators believe the shooting was “targeted” and “not a random act of violence.” Winstrom also noted that it is “possible” more than one shooter was involved. No arrests have been made in connection with the homicide.
“I met the grieving mother of this 19-year-old young man yesterday, and she deserves justice, and she deserves answers, and we’re going to do everything we can to get those for her,” Winstrom told reporters during a Sunday press conference.
While the crowd consisted of hundreds of unaccompanied minors, a police spokesperson clarified to the media that the event was not an organized “teen takeover”—a term used to describe large, unsanctioned gatherings coordinated via social media that have recently caused disruptions in cities like Chicago, Detroit, and Washington, D.C.
However, law enforcement noted that the atmosphere at the unsanctioned gathering was volatile even before the shooting. Officers arrested several individuals at the scene for offenses unrelated to the gunfire. Among those detained was a man who was allegedly throwing fireworks while armed with a handgun.
Winstrom expressed concern over the ages of those present and the volatile nature of the event, describing seeing young kids “engaging in some frightening behavior.”
“There were very young, innocent kids out there, and as tragically as this was the loss of a young man’s life, with seven people shot and with bullets flying, it could have been even that much worse,” Winstrom said.
The investigation remains active as Pensacola police continue to search for suspects and a motive behind the shooting.
