A night of Florida Keys fishing turned into a chaotic confrontation in Islamorada early Saturday morning, resulting in the arrest of a 49-year-old security guard.
Sylvain Nicanor, a resident of Homestead, now faces a string of serious felony charges after a dispute with a group of anglers at a local marina.
Deputies with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office were called to the 81000 block of the Overseas Highway around 1:10 a.m. on April 4, 2026. According to investigators, three men were fishing from a dock when they were approached by Nicanor, who was working security at the site.
The encounter escalated quickly. One of the men reported that Nicanor began yelling at them while pointing a 9mm handgun in his direction. During the exchange, the security guard reportedly grabbed the man’s fishing rod.
As the three men attempted to retreat to their vehicle, Nicanor allegedly tried to block their path, preventing them from driving away.

While the situation was tense, officials confirmed that no shots were fired and no injuries were reported.
The victims’ version of the night was backed up by more than just their statements. Investigators reviewed camera footage from a vessel docked at the marina, which corroborated the accounts of the three fishermen.
Following the review of the evidence, deputies located the 9mm handgun identified in the threat.
Nicanor was taken into custody and transported to the Monroe County Jail. He has been charged with aggravated assault, robbery, battery, and false imprisonment.
