HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. – A Brandon teenager already on juvenile probation for felony gun offenses is behind bars after authorities say he violently assaulted and held his girlfriend captive earlier this week.
Jai’Keen Barlow, 17, was arrested by Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office detectives following an investigation that began on Wednesday, June 24, 2026.
Domestic violence detectives launched the inquiry after responding to a Brandon home and a local hospital where the victim was being treated for injuries. According to investigators, what started as a verbal argument between the couple quickly escalated when Barlow pulled out a handgun and refused to let the victim leave.
Over the course of the incident, detectives report that Barlow repeatedly choked, slapped, and struck the victim using the firearm. He also allegedly threatened to kill both the victim and members of her family, and took her phone to stop her from calling emergency services for help. The victim’s injuries were determined to be non-life-threatening.
During the investigation, detectives successfully located and recovered the firearm used in the assault. Because Barlow is currently on juvenile probation for prior felony firearm offenses, he faces enhanced charges.
Barlow has been charged with armed kidnapping to harm or terrorize, armed false imprisonment, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, battery, and battery by strangulation. He also faces charges of tampering with a witness, one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm, and seven counts of being a felon in possession of ammunition.
Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister released a statement addressing the arrest and emphasizing the agency’s stance on relationship abuse.
“No one should ever live in fear of someone who claims to care about them,” Sheriff Chronister said. “This suspect used violence, intimidation, and a firearm to control and terrorize the victim. These are horrific acts, and we will continue to aggressively pursue those who commit domestic violence and ensure victims know they are not alone.”
