TAMPA, Fla. — The Montreal Canadiens are officially one win away from the second round after a gritty 3-2 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning on Wednesday night. The win at Benchmark International Arena gives Montreal a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven series, heading back to the Centre Bell this Friday with a chance to clinch.
The game turned into a classic goaltending duel, but it was the rookie who came out on top. Jakub Dobes was the difference-maker for Montreal, stopping 38 of 40 shots and frustrating a Lightning offense that controlled the puck for long stretches. Across the ice, veteran Andrei Vasilevskiy turned aside 21 of 24 shots in a losing effort.
Montreal built their lead through goals from Alexandre Texier and Kirby Dach before Brendan Gallagher netted what would eventually be the game-winner. Tampa Bay kept the pressure on with goals from Jake Guentzel and Dominic James, but they were unable to find the equalizer in a frantic third period.

“That’s why every play, every mistake is magnified,” Canadiens head coach Martin St. Louis said. “That’s how tight it is.”
The loss puts Tampa Bay in a precarious position. If they fail to win on Friday, it will mark their fourth consecutive first-round exit—a stunning fall for a franchise that dominated the early 2020s.
Lightning coach Jon Cooper noted that while the team has a veteran core, the supporting cast is still learning the ropes of playoff hockey.
“We’ve got a huge group… that have never been in this environment,” Cooper told NHL.com on Wednesday. “It’s hard to say we’re extremely experienced.”
The series shifts back to Montreal for Game 6. The Canadiens will look to finish the job in front of their home crowd, while the Lightning will try to keep their season alive and avoid another early summer.
