LAKELAND, Fla. — A 44-year-old Haines City man with outstanding warrants was arrested Sunday night after giving a deputy a fake name and running from police, according to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.
A deputy stopped Antwan Javaris Davis on Maine Avenue in Lakeland around 8:18 p.m. on Aug. 9 for a pedestrian violation. Davis told the deputy he did not have an ID on him and gave a fake name and birth date. A check of state records returned no matching results in the Florida database.
Davis then gave the deputy a Social Security number. According to police records, that number belonged to a woman.
Davis then ran away from the deputy on foot. The deputy chased him, caught up to him, and a struggle broke out. The deputy tried to use a Taser, and police said Davis tried to grab the weapon away from the deputy. The Taser was used again and worked, allowing the deputy to arrest Davis.
After the arrest, deputies confirmed Davis’s identity and found two active warrants for his arrest. Polk County had a warrant for Davis for violating his probation on earlier charges of battery on a police officer, resisting arrest, possession of over 20 grams of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Orange County also had a warrant for Davis for failing to appear in court on a charge of possessing oxycodone.
Deputies took Davis to the Sheriff’s Processing Center. On top of his existing warrants, deputies charged Davis with battery on a police officer, resisting arrest with violence, resisting arrest without violence, giving a false name to police, taking away an officer’s means of protection, and probation violation.
Sheriff’s office records show Davis has a long criminal history, with past arrests that include grand theft, forgery, drug trafficking, tampering with evidence, and driving with a suspended license.
