As Labor Day weekend approaches, bringing with it the traditional exodus of visitors and locals alike, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office is issuing a stern warning: be prepared for significant traffic on U.S. 1 and, above all, do not drink and drive.

The Sheriff’s Office announced today that it will be participating in the national “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign, a concentrated effort to reduce the number of drunk and impaired drivers on the nation’s roadways. In the Florida Keys, where U.S. 1 serves as the sole artery connecting the islands, the dangers of impaired driving are particularly acute.

“In the Keys, with only one road in and one road out, and few alternatives to U.S. 1 when traveling any distance at all, drunk driving is a particularly dangerous activity,” said a spokesperson for the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office. “We will be out in force keeping an eye out for drunk or impaired drivers alongside our law enforcement partners.”

But the focus on safety isn’t limited to the asphalt. With Labor Day weekend being one of the busiest times on the water, the Sheriff’s Office Marine Units will also be on heightened patrol. Large crowds are expected at marinas, boat ramps, and on the open water. The office reminds mariners that boating under the influence (BUI) is also a serious offense that can lead to a jail sentence.

The message from law enforcement is clear: patience is a necessity. “We expect large crowds on the water as well as at marinas and boat ramps. Be patient,” the spokesperson advised.

While the prospect of a busy weekend may seem daunting, the Sheriff’s Office emphasizes that its primary goal is not to fill jail cells. “Putting people in jail is not our goal, although we will if necessary,” the spokesperson said. “The goal is to prevent people from driving or boating while impaired. Please help us with our goal — keep our roadways and waters safe during this holiday period.”

Residents and visitors are urged to plan ahead, designate a sober driver, and exercise caution and patience to ensure a safe and enjoyable Labor Day weekend for everyone in the Florida Keys.
