HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. – The 17-year-old Brandon High School student struck by a CSX train on Thursday morning died from his injuries on Friday, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.

At approximately 8:23 a.m., deputies rushed to the railroad tracks near Lakewood Drive in Brandon following reports of a collision involving a pedestrian. Upon arrival, first responders found the teenager in critical condition and immediately transported him to Tampa General Hospital.

According to preliminary details from the investigation, the student was walking along the tracks toward Brandon High School when a CSX train approached from behind. Investigators say the teen attempted to jump out of the way at the last moment but was unable to clear the train’s path.

Two key factors are currently being examined as investigators piece together how the accident happened.

Deputies discovered a pair of headphones near the scene, raising questions about whether the student was able to hear the oncoming train.

Additionally, witnesses and officials noted dense fog blanketing the area at the time of the collision, which may have severely limited visibility for both the pedestrian and the train crew.

The investigation remains active as authorities work to determine the precise circumstances leading up to the fatal impact.
