HERNANDO COUNTY, Fla. – Commuters and commercial drivers traveling through Hernando County should prepare for potential delays next week as the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) kicks off a fresh round of maintenance.

Starting Monday, February 23, crews will begin work on a stretch of US 98 spanning from north of CR 491 (Citrus Way) to just north of Landfill Road.

According to the FDOT District 7 lane closure summary, the project will require intermittent lane closures and flagging operations daily through Friday, February 27. The work is scheduled to take place during daylight hours, specifically between 7:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. While the road will remain open, the use of flagging operations means traffic will be reduced to a single lane at times, with workers directing vehicles from both directions through the construction zone.

Local authorities are advising motorists to allow for extra travel time or to seek alternative routes if they are on a tight schedule. Because this specific corridor serves as a primary link for both local residents and heavy truck traffic heading toward the landfill and northern county lines, congestion is expected to peak during mid-morning and late afternoon hours.

The FDOT has not specified the exact nature of the work being performed, though these types of flagging operations are common for asphalt repairs, utility work, or shoulder maintenance.

As always, fines for speeding are doubled in active construction zones when workers are present, and drivers are urged to stay alert for personnel and equipment near the roadway. The project is currently slated to wrap up by Friday evening, pending any weather-related interruptions.
