Hide-And-Seek Under A Bed Ends In Taser Deployment For Florida Keys Man

A 55-year-old Sugarloaf Key man found himself in handcuffs Saturday evening after a chaotic disturbance at a local marina led to a confrontation with law enforcement. Charles Dwain Shrum now faces charges of resisting arrest following a series of events that began at the Sugarloaf Marina around 5:20 p.m.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene after reports surfaced of a man attempting to fight customers and trespassing on the property.

According to authorities, Shrum struck one bystander during the altercation and pushed the man into the water. Despite the physical nature of the encounter, the victim declined to press formal charges against Shrum for the assault.

When deputies arrived, Shrum was nowhere to be found at the marina. After a brief search of the immediate area, law enforcement located him at a nearby residence.

Deputies discovered Shrum hiding underneath a bed in an attempt to evade capture.

The situation escalated when Shrum refused to comply with the deputy’s commands. During the struggle, a deputy deployed a Taser to subdue him. Shrum was subsequently taken into custody and transported to the Lower Keys Medical Center on Stock Island for a medical evaluation before being booked into jail.

Officials confirmed that no life-threatening injuries were reported during the initial disturbance or the subsequent arrest. Shrum remains charged with resisting arrest.
