Federal agents arrested 101 commercial truck drivers across California this week, concluding a major enforcement sweep aimed at undocumented individuals holding commercial driver’s licenses (CDLs).

The initiative, dubbed Operation Highway Sentinel, was led by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) branches in San Francisco and Los Angeles. Officials described the operation as a direct intervention into public safety risks they claim are exacerbated by California state policies.

According to ICE Deputy Director Madison D. Sheahan, the arrests were necessary to address dangers posed by drivers who, despite obtaining state-issued CDLs, lack legal status in the U.S. Sheahan explicitly criticized California Governor Gavin Newsom’s administration, linking the issuance of these licenses to a series of fatal accidents involving commercial vehicles in California, Florida, and Oregon throughout 2025.

“His government knowingly issued thousands of CDLs to illegal aliens who had no business driving at all, let alone behind the wheel of a massive semi-truck,” Sheahan said in a statement. “ICE is stepping in where his state failed.”

Federal authorities pointed to eight traffic fatalities in 2025 caused by unauthorized drivers operating commercial vehicles. Officials alleged that many of the drivers targeted in the sweep could not read English or understand road signs—federal requirements for operating heavy transport vehicles.

The operation focused on trucking companies in central and northern California suspected of ties to broader criminal activities. Beyond traffic safety, HSI indicated that the trucking sector in these regions has become a vector for human smuggling, narcotics trafficking, and cargo theft.

“In the wake of multiple deadly motor vehicle accidents involving illegal aliens operating as commercial truck drivers, federal law enforcement is taking action to prevent further tragedy,” said HSI San Francisco Special Agent in Charge Tatum King. The 101 individuals arrested hail from a wide range of countries, including India, Mexico, Colombia, Russia, and Venezuela. They will remain in ICE custody pending immigration proceedings.

In addition to the highway arrests, investigators conducted roughly 800 cargo inspections at major ports, which handle about 85 percent of goods entering the U.S., resulting in two additional arrests at those economic hubs.

Operation Highway Sentinel follows similar federal crackdowns in Indiana, New York, and Oklahoma, which have collectively resulted in over 200 arrests of undocumented commercial drivers.

“Our operation has taken 101 drivers off the streets who should not have been behind the wheel,” said HSI Los Angeles Special Agent in Charge Eddy Wang. “Violations of our laws and threats to public safety will not be tolerated.”
