MONROE COUNTY, Fla. – A Friday afternoon ATV ride down the Florida Keys’ main highway ended in jail time for a local resident.
The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office arrested 55-year-old Alan Charles Benson on June 19, 2026, after deputies spotted him driving an all-terrain vehicle erratically on U.S. 1.
According to authorities, the incident unfolded around 1:15 p.m. near Mile Marker 95.5. Deputies reported seeing Benson operating the ATV as it drifted out of its lane. As the vehicle turned onto U.S. 1, Benson pulled a wheelie in plain view of law enforcement.
Deputies quickly initiated a traffic stop, but the interaction hit a snag when Benson refused to identify himself to the officers on the scene.
Benson was taken into custody and transported to the Monroe County Jail. He has been officially charged with reckless driving and giving a false name to law enforcement.
The Sheriff’s Office confirmed that no injuries were reported during the incident.
