Appearing on MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough’s show on Friday, Clinton, who bombed twice as a presidential candidate, asserted that Trump and others in the GOP have provided “aid and comfort” to the Russian strongman with some of their remarks, and should be called out for “a total loss of spine and conscience” among Republicans.
“We have to also make sure that within our own country we are calling out those people who are giving aid and comfort to Vladimir Putin, who are talking about what a genius he is, what a smart move it is, who are unfortunately being broadcast by Russian media, not only inside Russia, but in Europe to demonstrate the division within our own country,” Clinton told Scarborough.
Clinton’s comment referred to the clause in the Constitution that defines the crime of treason as consisting of “levying war against them [the United States], or in adhering to their enemies, giving them aid and comfort.”
Her remarks also referred to recent comments by Trump about Putin’s strategy.
Scarborough agrees that it was “distressing” that such comments were being broadcast inside Russia, and migrating to Ukraine, as evidence of support for Putin.
“I think it’s time for what’s left of the Republican Party that has any common sense not just to say, ‘OK, go help defend Ukraine against Putin,’ but to stand against those people in politics and government, in the media and elsewhere in our own country who are literally giving aid and comfort to an enemy of freedom and democracy,” Clinton added in a follow-up comment.
She said Trump and others play “right into the ambitions of not just Putin, but also President Xi [Jinping] of China to undermine democracy, to literally divide and conquer the West without ever invading us, but by setting us against each other.”
“Starting with [the] ascent of Trump,” said Clinton, “there has been, sadly, a total loss of spine and conscience of too many Republicans,” whom she added are “naive in such a dangerous way.”
That “is really hard to understand,” Clinton concluded. “But we have to deal with it, and we have to call it out.”
What made the former secretary of state’s comments simply astounding, and appalling, is that Clinton, during the 2016 election, paid a third party to hire a former British spy who went to sources inside the Kremlin to dig up dirt on Trump.
That produced the infamous Steele dossier, which was totally concocted, but still used by Clinton and other Democrats, including Scarborough, to lie that Trump was a tool of Putin’s and elected with the help of Russian operatives – a disinformation campaign so effective and swallowed so completely by Democrats that nearly two years after the election a majority of liberals actually believed Russians hacked voting equipment to change vote totals.
Moreover, special prosecutor John Durham recently filed court documents indicating others hired by Clinton during her campaign not only hacked computers in Trump’s office and apartment to spy on him, but even gained access to the White House’s computer network to continue the electronic surveillance once Trump was in office.
For his part, Scarborough, a former GOP congressman from the Florida Panhandle, failed to mention any of Clinton’s past efforts to undermine the integrity of the American political system, and also did not discuss that Putin has been emboldened to attack his neighbors mostly when Democrats – Barack Obama and Joe Biden – have controlled the White House.
