POLK COUNTY, Fla. – A Hillsborough County Sheriff’s deputy has been arrested in Polk County on a charge of domestic violence battery.
On Saturday, December 28th, Polk County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a disturbance at the home of 38-year-old Mark Verkest in Mulberry. An altercation had occurred between Verkest and an adult female resident of the home.
Following an investigation, Polk County deputies determined that Verkest had battered the woman and took him into custody. Based on statements made by Verkest, he was also placed under the Baker Act, which allows for the involuntary institutionalization of individuals deemed a danger to themselves or others due to mental illness.

Verkest has been charged with one count of domestic violence battery.
“Deputies are entrusted with the responsibility to serve as role models in our community, and this behavior is completely unacceptable and disappointing,” said Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister. “I expect every HCSO deputy to hold themselves to the highest standards of conduct and integrity, both in their professional and personal lives.”
Verkest has been employed with the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office since September 2017. He has been placed on unpaid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
