HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. — The Hillsborough County Extension Service is offering a series of educational classes and workshops throughout August, covering topics such as gardening, food preservation, financial planning, and environmental stewardship.
The programs are scheduled in both in-person and online formats. According to county officials, the offerings feature research-based instruction intended to assist residents with saving money, conserving natural resources, and developing practical life skills. Most courses are open to beginner-level participants across the county.
The August schedule features classes across several categories:
Gardening, Landscaping, and Water Conservation
- Aug. 1: In-person workshops on Composting, Microirrigation, and Rainwater Harvesting
- Aug. 4: Virtual class titled “Plant This, Not That: Invasive and Native Plants”
- Aug. 11: In-person “Bat to the Future” Workshop
- Aug. 13: Virtual Vegetable Microirrigation Workshop
- Aug. 20: Virtual Florida-Friendly Landscaping Webinar focused on managing yard pests responsibly
- Aug. 21–22: Great Florida Pollinator Census participation
Food Preservation and Cottage Foods
- Aug. 1: In-person “Water Bath Canning 101: Pickling” class
- Aug. 4: Virtual “Introduction to Cottage Foods in Florida” course
Financial Education
- Throughout August: One-on-one financial education appointments (by reservation) and a self-paced online course titled “Financial Building Blocks”
- Aug. 5: Virtual presentation on Roth and Traditional Retirement Accounts
- Aug. 12: Virtual workshop on Roth Conversion Basics
Agriculture and Environmental Education
- Aug. 4: Agriculture Economic Development Council Meeting (offered in-person and virtually)
- Aug. 15: In-person youth program titled “MapQuest: Scalloping Habitat” for ages 14 to 18
- Aug. 29: In-person 4-H Open House
