TAMPA, Fla. – A Hillsborough County jury has decided that four men convicted in the high-profile ambush of Florida rapper Julio Foolio should spend the rest of their days in prison rather than face execution.
The panel recommended sentences of life without parole for Isaiah Chance, Sean Gathright, Davion Murphy, and Rashad Murphy. The decision caps off a tense, weeklong penalty phase following the men’s convictions earlier this month for first-degree murder in the shooting death of Charles Jones, who performed under the stage name Julio Foolio.
Seeking the death penalty, prosecutors presented the June 2024 slaying as a cold, highly coordinated hit born out of a bitter, ongoing gang feud. The defense countered by calling on psychologists and family members who detailed the defendants’ troubled upbringings and intellectual limitations in an effort to spare their lives.

Ultimately, the jury chose to take death off the table.
“We thank the jury for their service in this case and for the thoughtful consideration they gave to the evidence presented during both phases of this trial,” State Attorney Suzy Lopez said following the recommendation. “While no outcome can undo the pain caused by this violence or bring Charles Jones back to his loved ones, today’s recommendation brings accountability and a measure of finality to the victim’s family. It’s also a reminder that if you bring violent crime into Hillsborough County, we will hold you accountable.”
The state’s case was led by Death Penalty Specialist Scott Harmon and Assistant State Attorneys Michelle Doherty and Anna Ismer.
While the jury has made its voice clear, the final decision rests with the gavel. A judge will officially sentence the four men at a scheduled hearing on June 22.
