Hillsborough County Opens Cold Weather Shelters As Temperatures Plummet

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. – With temperatures expected to dip below 40 degrees Fahrenheit this week, Hillsborough County is activating its cold weather shelters program to provide refuge for those in need.

From Monday night, January 6th, through Thursday night, January 9th, several shelters across the county will open their doors to the homeless and those lacking adequate heat in their homes.

Shelter Locations

The following organizations are partnering with Hillsborough County to offer limited-capacity cold-weather shelters:

  • Church of God of Prophecy Hyde Park: 107 S. Oregon Ave., Tampa, FL 33606
  • Hyde Park United Methodist Church: 500 W. Platt St., Tampa, FL 33606 (preferred media location)
  • Tampa Bay Mission of Hope: 212 S. St. Cloud Ave. Building A, Valrico, FL 33594
  • Amazing Love Ministries: 3304 E. Columbus Dr., Tampa, FL 33605

Important Information

  • Capacity: Shelters have limited capacity and are expected to be in high demand. Individuals are encouraged to seek shelter with friends or family first, if possible.
  • Hours: All shelters will accept guests from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM each night, unless they reach capacity earlier.
  • Adults Only: Congregate shelters are for adults only.
  • Families with Children: Metropolitan Ministries is offering a limited number of single-night motel vouchers for families with minor children. Pre-registration is required by calling (813) 209-1176 before 5:00 PM on Monday, January 6th.
  • Donations: Shelters are accepting donations of hats, gloves, scarves, socks, and toiletries.

The County urges residents to check on elderly neighbors and those with health conditions who may be particularly vulnerable to the cold.
