Hillsborough County Sheriff Fires Veteran Major For On-Duty Drinking

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. – The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office terminated a high-ranking officer this week following a swift internal investigation into his conduct on the job.

Major Troy Morgan was officially let go on Wednesday, April 8, after an administrative review determined he was under the influence of alcohol while on duty.

The dismissal ends Morgan’s long-standing career with the agency, a move the Sheriff’s Office described as a necessary response to a direct violation of department policy. According to officials, the decision to remove Morgan was effective immediately once the findings of the review were confirmed.

Sheriff Chad Chronister addressed the firing in a statement, noting the difficulty of losing a veteran member of the force while emphasizing the need for strict accountability within the ranks.

“Major Morgan dedicated many years of service to this organization, and this outcome is not one we ever want to see,” Sheriff Chronister said. “But the expectations we place on our employees are clear. We are entrusted by this community to serve with integrity, sound judgment, and professionalism at all times. When those standards are not met, we must take decisive action.”

The Sheriff also touched on the potential underlying issues involved in the incident, adding, “We also recognize that situations like this can involve personal struggles, and we hope he gets the help he needs.”

Because the incident is classified as a personnel matter, the Sheriff’s Office has declined to release further specifics regarding the circumstances leading up to the review. No additional details about the administrative findings have been made public at this time.
