TAMPA, Fla. — The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office has launched an investigation following the death of an inmate who spent nearly a week receiving treatment at a local hospital.
Deputies said 35-year-old Ryan Zavalick died late Sunday night after being admitted to Tampa General Hospital for medical complications.
According to agency records, Zavalick was being held at the Falkenburg Road Jail when jail staff transferred him to the hospital on August 24 for health-related concerns. He remained under the care of hospital staff until he was pronounced dead at 11:13 p.m. on August 30.
Investigators confirmed that Zavalick’s next of kin has been notified.
The sheriff’s office did not disclose the specific medical issues that led to Zavalick’s hospitalization, nor did they provide details regarding his underlying charges.
The Hillsborough County Medical Examiner’s Office is handling the case to determine the official cause and manner of death. The sheriff’s office stated that its internal investigation into the incident remains open and active.
