HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. – Drivers hitting the road for last-minute holiday shopping or family gatherings next week might want to double-check their routes.

Despite the upcoming holidays, road crews will be active across Hillsborough County, with the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) District 7 announcing a slate of closures affecting major arteries including I-275, I-75, and I-4.

The scheduled work runs from Sunday, December 21, through Saturday, December 27, 2025. While most of the heavy lifting on the interstates is reserved for overnight hours, several surface streets will see continuous, 24-hour lane reductions that could snarl daytime traffic.

Interstate Impacts

If you are crossing the bay at night, keep an eye on the Howard Frankland Bridge. Crews will be closing lanes on I-275 between Hillsborough and Pinellas counties nightly from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m., starting Sunday, Dec. 21 through Tuesday, Dec. 23.

Travelers on I-75 should also expect delays between SR 574 (Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.) and Fowler Avenue. Nightly lane closures are set for Sunday through Tuesday from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. This particular project is expected to keep lanes closed intermittently through late January.

Meanwhile, I-4 will see activity at McIntosh Road, with westbound lane closures planned for Sunday and Monday nights (9:30 p.m. to 5:30 a.m.). Drivers on Branch Forbes Road passing under I-4 will face similar closures during those same hours.

24-Hour Closures and Local Hotspots

Perhaps the biggest headache for daily commuters will be on US 301. A continuous lane closure begins at 8 p.m. this Sunday between Bloomingdale Avenue and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. Unlike the overnight work, this lane reduction won’t lift in the morning—it’s scheduled to remain in place until January 30.

Similarly, northbound drivers on SR 39 (between Kilgore Rd. and East Sparkman Rd.) will face a 24-hour-a-day lane closure that kicks off Sunday and runs through the entire holiday week.

Other Notable Closures:

  • Downtown Tampa: Expect intermittent lane closures on Florida Avenue at Kennedy Blvd. and Jackson St. during daylight hours (9 a.m. to 3 p.m.) on Monday and Tuesday.
  • SR 60: Nightly closures are set between SR 39 and Clarence Gordon Jr. Road on Sunday and Monday.
  • SR 574 (MLK Blvd.): Lanes will close overnight from 69th St. to Queen Palm Dr. on Sunday and Monday.
  • Arrawana Avenue: A full road closure south of Kennedy Blvd. remains in effect continuously until 6:30 a.m. Monday morning.

Drivers are urged to exercise caution in these work zones, as crews will be operating just feet from moving traffic during one of the busiest travel weeks of the year.
