HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. – Drivers in Hillsborough County should prepare for a busy week of orange cones and flashing lights as the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) District 7 kicks off an extensive series of roadwork projects.
Starting Sunday, May 10, through Saturday, May 16, commuters will face a variety of nightly and daily lane closures across major interstates and local arteries.
The interstates will see the heaviest impact during the overnight hours. On I-4, eastbound lanes between the Tampa Bypass Canal and I-75 will be restricted from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. through Thursday. Meanwhile, I-75 travelers near the MLK and Fowler Avenue interchanges should expect delays every night through the end of the month, with closures running from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
The Howard Frankland Bridge is also on the list. Both directions will experience nightly lane closures starting at 9 p.m., while northbound I-275 near the SR 60 interchange will see restrictions until Friday morning. Further south, the Gandy Bridge will be down to fewer lanes eastbound from 6:30 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. throughout the week.

Surface roads are not exempt from the upgrades. US 301 is a primary focus area, with multiple work zones active near Big Bend Road, Sun City Center Boulevard, and Ayersworth Glen. Most of these projects are scheduled for the overnight shift, though the Ayersworth Glen location will involve daytime work from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Several long-term projects continue to impact local connectivity. Broadway Avenue under US 301 remains closed 24 hours a day through June 9. Similarly, the Frontage Road between Cypress Street and Lemon Street is fully shut down, a closure that is expected to remain in place until January 2027.
Motorists are encouraged to check their routes before heading out and to remain alert for workers in these construction zones. Below is a summary of the key affected areas:
- I-275 (Willow Ave to Green St): Nightly closures, 9 p.m. to 6:30 a.m.
- SR 60 (Memorial Hwy): Westbound closures near the Veterans Expressway, 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.
- Dale Mabry (at Gandy): Nightly closures, 8:30 p.m. to 6:30 a.m.
- Park Road (Plant City): Both day and night closures between US 92 and I-4.
- SR 39 (Kilgore Rd to Sparkman Rd): Southbound lane closed 24 hours a day through Tuesday.
While FDOT has not provided specific quotes regarding this week’s schedule, the agency maintains that these closures are necessary for ongoing infrastructure improvements and maintenance across the District 7 network.
