HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. – Hillsborough County drivers are facing a heavy dose of orange cones and flashing signs over the next two weeks. The Florida Department of Transportation has released its latest construction schedule, outlining an extensive series of lane and road closures starting July 5.
Most of the work is timed to happen at night to minimize the headache for daytime commuters, but several major highways and bridges will see significant disruptions.
Interstate travel will take a major hit. On I-4, westbound drivers can expect lanes to narrow down from 50th Street to MLK Jr. Boulevard between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m., starting Monday, July 6 and running through Thursday, July 9. Meanwhile, I-75 travelers will encounter nighttime lane closures from MLK Jr. Boulevard up to Fowler Avenue. This project stretches longer than most, running from Sunday, July 5 all the way through Friday, July 17, between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. each night.
Commuters heading between Hillsborough and Pinellas counties will need to watch their speed and their lanes on the major bridges. The Howard Frankland Bridge (I-275) will see nighttime closures in both directions from July 5 to July 11, between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. Additionally, northbound I-275 near the State Road 60 interchange will have separate lane closures from July 5 to July 9, between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m.
The eastbound entrance ramp from SR 60 onto northbound I-275 is also tied into this schedule, closing during those same overnight hours. For drivers taking the Gandy Bridge (US 92), eastbound lanes will close nightly from 6:30 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. between July 5 and July 11. That same timeline applies further down the road on Gandy Boulevard as it stretches toward Dale Mabry Highway, wrapping up just a day earlier on July 10.
Other parts of I-275 within Tampa are on the list too. Lanes will close down between Willow Avenue and Green Street from July 5 through July 9, lasting from 9 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. nightly.
Local US routes are seeing plenty of action as well. On US 41, workers will be on the Nebraska Avenue bridge over the Hillsborough River, leading to daytime lane closures from 10:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., Tuesday, July 7 through Saturday, July 11. Further south, the US 41 22nd Street Causeway bridge over McKay Bay will switch to night work, closing lanes from 7 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. from July 5 to July 9.
US 301 is looking at multiple project zones. A long stretch from the Manatee County line up to Sun City Center Boulevard will have night closures from 7 p.m. to 6:30 a.m., July 5 through July 11. Spot work on US 301 includes daytime closures at Ayersworth Glen Boulevard (8 a.m. to 6 p.m., July 6-10), night closures at Big Bend Road (7 p.m. to 6 a.m., July 6-10), and night closures from Causeway Boulevard to I-75 (8 p.m. to 6 a.m., July 6-9).
State roads are also affected by the summer construction push. In Plant City, James L. Redman Parkway (SR 39) will have night lane closures between Rayburn Road and Golden Rule Lane from July 7 to July 9, between 8 p.m. and 7:30 a.m. Park Road (SR 553) will experience daytime closures from Baker Street to north of I-4, operating from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., July 6 through July 10. In Tampa, Adamo Drive (SR 60) will see nighttime restrictions at North 26th Street from July 5 to July 9, between 8:30 p.m. and 6:30 a.m.
West Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard (SR 574) has two active zones. At North 12th Street, crews will work during the day (8 a.m. to 6 p.m., July 6-10) and at night (7 p.m. to midnight, July 5-9). Near Buccaneer Place, overnight work will run from 6:30 p.m. to 7 a.m., July 5 through July 9.
Finally, drivers should plan around several extended and continuous closures. Broadway Avenue under US 301 is completely shut down 24 hours a day through Friday, July 17. Southbound County Line Road will see night closures from Swindell Road to South Frontage Road from July 6 to July 16, between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m.
Near the airport area, Frontage Road is facing long-term disruptions: the stretch from Cypress Street to Cypress Center Drive has a 24-hour lane closure lasting through late 2026, while the block from Cypress Street to Lemon Street is entirely closed 24 hours a day until January 2027. Local flagging operations will also be active on Gray Street at Reo Street from July 6 to July 10, between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m., and Mango Road (CR 579) over I-4 will have night closures from 9:30 p.m. to 5:30 a.m., July 5 through July 9.
