In a major surprise, negotiators from the United States, Russia, and Ukraine are all meeting in the United Arab Emirates today. This is a big deal because it is the first time we know of that officials from all three countries have sat in the same room since Russia invaded Ukraine back in 2022.
Before this, the sides mostly talked through other people or held separate meetings. Getting everyone together in one place suggests that efforts to stop the fighting might be getting more serious.
This gathering didn’t just happen out of nowhere. It comes right after a busy week of high-level conversations around the world.

Just yesterday, President Donald Trump met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Davos, Switzerland. After their chat, Trump kept things realistic. He told reporters that there is still “a ways to go” before the war can officially end.
Sticking Points Remain
While the meeting in the UAE is a step forward, it doesn’t mean peace is guaranteed tomorrow.
Separately, Russian President Vladimir Putin met with a group of American representatives. According to an official from the Kremlin, Putin made his stance clear: there won’t be any long-term peace deal unless they fix the arguments over land first.
For now, the world is watching the UAE to see if getting everyone in the same room can actually break the deadlock.
