Doctor visits for flu-like symptoms have climbed to their highest level in a quarter-century, according to new data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The sharp rise comes as a mutated strain of the virus, known as “subclade K,” takes hold across the country, driving high to very high flu activity in nearly every U.S. state.

Health officials report the 2025-2026 flu season has already impacted an estimated 11 million Americans. Of those, 120,000 have required hospitalization, and 5,000 deaths have been attributed to the virus so far.

The surge is largely blamed on subclade K, a variant that emerged after the composition of this year’s flu vaccine was finalized. This timing mismatch means current shots may offer only partial protection against infection.

However, medical experts emphasize that vaccination remains a critical tool. Even with a lower match, the vaccine can significantly reduce the severity of symptoms and lower the risk of fatal complications.

Hospitals are facing increased pressure as the season intensifies, with the CDC urging the public to take preventative measures immediately to curb transmission.
