Governor Kathy Hochul, on Tuesday, promised to “fight like hell” to ensure New York State does not lose federal funding if Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani, a democratic socialist, wins the New York City mayoral election next month.

Speaking to reporters in Queens after an event with Mamdani, Hochul was responding to President Donald Trump’s repeated threats to withhold federal money should Mamdani win.

Hochul argued that cutting funding would be “detrimental” to the city and the nation, calling New York City the “economic engine” for the state.

“Everyone in this country should be vested in the success of New York City, as I am,” Hochul stated. She suggested she would appeal to Trump by noting the cuts would harm his “properties, business interests, his friends in the city.”

Hochul, who endorsed Mamdani last month despite “major differences” on many issues, said she considers him an “ally” focused on making the city more affordable. She emphasized her readiness to explain to the White House why punishing New York for exercising its democratic vote is not in the nation’s interest.
