“Homework Gap”: Nevada, Florida And Virginia Top List Of States Searching For Academic Loopholes

As the new year kicks into high gear, students across the country are settling back into their routines. But while some are hitting the books, others are hitting the search bar, looking for ways to get out of them.

A new analysis has pinpointed exactly where students are most eager to dodge their academic responsibilities. The study, released by Essay Grader AI, tracked Google search volume for terms related to skipping school, homework excuses, and AI tools used to complete assignments.

It turns out that Nevada is the nation’s capital for homework avoidance.

The Silver State took the top spot with a monthly average of 23.85 searches for excuses per 100,000 residents. That rate is more than double what was seen in Oregon, the state where students seem most resigned to just doing the work.

Florida wasn’t far behind. The Sunshine State ranked second overall, generating roughly 22.58 searches per 100,000 people. Interestingly, the data showed a specific trend in Florida: the most popular search term wasn’t a traditional excuse like “sick day,” but rather “AI homework helper.”

This high volume of searches comes despite—or perhaps because of—Florida’s massive student population. According to National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) data cited in the report, Florida has the third-highest number of school-aged residents in the U.S. (3.2 million).

Virginia rounded out the top three. Students there generated about 20.80 searches per 100,000 residents, frequently looking for “homework solutions” and “homework solver.”

The Geography of “My Dog Ate It”

The study highlights a distinct regional divide. While states in the South and West (like Maryland, Georgia, and Texas) populated the top ten, the Midwest appears to be far more diligent.

States like Iowa, Wisconsin, and Missouri all landed in the bottom ten, showing significantly lower interest in finding shortcuts. Oregon claimed the title of the most studious state—or at least the most honest—with only 10.10 searches per 100,000 residents.

A Cry for Help or Just Looking for an Easy Out?

While it’s easy to write this off as kids just being lazy, Chan Yerneni, CEO of Essay Grader AI, suggests the data might point to something deeper than simple procrastination.

“The findings of this study appear to show vast differences between educational cultures and student priorities across the country,” Yerneni said.

He noted that high search volumes for AI tools don’t necessarily prove students are cheating. In many cases, they might be stuck and looking for a lifeline.

“It’s important to realize that just because students in these states are searching for AI assistance, it’s not proof that they are seeking to cheat,” Yerneni added. “Instead, this may show that they are struggling and could benefit from extra attention.”

Yerneni suggests that for schools in high-ranking states like Nevada and Florida, the solution might lie in how assignments are structured. “Creating homework that connects to students’ interests often increases completion rates and reduces the need for excuses.”
