A tragic incident happened in Louisiana on Monday when a 5-year-old boy, Carson Lawson, was fatally struck by an SUV driven by his grandmother as he waited for his school bus.
Authorities with the Slidell Police Department announced Monday that Kristen Anders, 55, has been charged with vehicular homicide in connection with the death of her grandson.
The incident took place around 7 a.m. on the 300 block of Spartan Loop. Police say the child was in the driveway, potentially sitting down, in front of his grandmother’s 2016 GMC Yukon. Anders, who was reportedly headed to work, drove the vehicle forward and hit the boy, who was “killed instantly.”
Police stated that Anders stopped the SUV after realizing she had “run over something” and claimed she “did not know that the child was outside.”
However, officers who arrived on the scene determined she “exhibited signs of impairment.” Investigators concluded Anders was “under the influence of alcohol and central nervous system suppressants.”
Slidell Police Chief Daniel Seuzeneau called the case “very tragic” and a “parent’s worst nightmare,” noting the devastating impact on the family and first responders. The investigation is ongoing.
