Florida public, private, and charter schools can register for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s (FWC) School Fishing Program starting next month. Registration opens on Thursday, August 20 at 8:00 a.m. EST and will be processed on a first-come, first-served basis.
The initiative, titled “Reel in Learning: School Fishing Program Registration Opens Aug. 20,” provides registered schools with a ready-to-use curriculum. Designed to be taught throughout the academic year by a designated club sponsor, the lessons cover foundational concepts for both freshwater and saltwater fishing.
The coursework includes instruction on ethical angling, fish habitats, aquatic conservation, fishing equipment, and casting skills.
According to the FWC, the program aims to “help the next generation of anglers discover a lifelong connection to fishing and conservation.”
The program is limited to brick-and-mortar institutions across the state. In addition to the standard curriculum, a select number of participating schools will receive extra educational materials and physical fishing equipment to assist in starting or expanding their student fishing clubs.
State wildlife officials advise interested schools to review the updated program Rules & Guidelines prior to the registration date to verify their eligibility and understand all compliance requirements before submitting an application.
