A 17-year-old boy has been charged with murder following an incident at a California home daycare that resulted in the death of a 4-month-old infant. The teenager is currently in custody at the Los Padrinos Juvenile Hall after being arraigned on July 2.
The victim has been identified as Troy May Elaine Cohn of Pomona, California. According to KTLA, the teen charged in the incident has autism and was present at the daycare facility when the event occurred.
The Claremont Police Department reported that officers responded to a medical emergency call in the 1400 block of Lynoak Drive, where an at-home daycare was operating. Upon arriving at the scene, law enforcement officials determined that the infant had been thrown to the floor by a juvenile inside the residence.
Los Angeles County Fire Department personnel provided immediate response and transported the 4-month-old to the Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center. Because of the critical nature of her injuries, the baby was later moved to the Children’s Hospital of Orange County, where she ultimately died.
The child’s mother, Jasmyne Cohn, described the extent of the injuries to local media. “My child had bruises all over her body,” Cohn told KTLA. “Her head was fractured.”
The infant’s parents, Jasmyne Cohn and Anthony Owens, stated they believe the teenager was left alone with their daughter by the daycare’s owner. They noted that the facility was intended to care for children aged 8 and under. Both parents are publicly demanding that local authorities shut the facility down permanently, citing a failure in proper oversight.
“I lost my daughter due to the negligence of this daycare,” Cohn said to reporters. “He should not have been in a daycare with children. Not just my child, any child.”
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities review the operations of the home daycare and the circumstances surrounding the teenager’s supervision.
