An elementary school principal in Montgomery County who previously led his district’s equity and inclusion efforts is facing termination after inadvertently recording himself launching into an antisemitic triad against a parent.

Phillip Leddy, principal of Lower Gwynedd Elementary School, was placed on administrative leave Friday following the incident. According to reports from Philadelphia-area media, Leddy admitted to the conduct after realizing his phone line remained open following a voicemail he left for a student’s parent.

Thinking the call had ended, Leddy allegedly began venting to another staff member in the room. The audio captured him using the phrase “Jew camp” and disparaging the parent, surmising they were likely an attorney with “Jew money.” The recording also reportedly captured Leddy repeating antisemitic conspiracy theories regarding Jewish people and banking.

The Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia issued a blistering statement regarding the incident, noting that the content of the rant was not the only concerning factor.

“The presence of others in the room, the lack of challenge or interruption, and the comfort with which these remarks were spoken raise serious questions about culture, accountability, and oversight within the school environment,” the Federation stated. “We understand the district is also investigating the involvement of others whose voices are audible on the recording, which is a necessary and appropriate step.”

In a twist that has drawn sharp scrutiny to the district’s vetting processes, archived pages from the Lower Gwynedd Elementary School website show Leddy had a significant history in diversity leadership. Before taking the helm as principal in September 2023, he served for several years as the Committee Chair for the Wissahickon School District’s Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Committee.

His biography was scrubbed from the school’s website as of Friday night.

According to WVPI TV, Leddy self-reported the incident. Despite this, district officials are moving swiftly. He has been recommended for termination, with a formal hearing scheduled for Monday.

Wissahickon School District Superintendent Dr. Mwenyewe Dawan addressed the fallout, attempting to distance the wider faculty from the principal’s remarks.

“I do not believe the actions and words of this principal reflect the views of our staff entirely,” Dawan told CBS Philadelphia. “One person’s hateful actions should not negatively impact the way our community views the rest of our staff.”
