House Speaker Mike Johnson took Democrats to task on Tuesday, labeling the current partial shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security a reckless “hostage” situation that prioritizes political games over the literal safety of the American people.
Speaking ahead of the State of the Union, the Louisiana Republican expressed disbelief that the country is facing its third government shutdown in just 100 days, pointing the finger squarely at a sudden reversal by leadership across the aisle.
According to Johnson, Republicans had already secured a bipartisan, year-long funding deal for the DHS through a formal committee process. He noted that despite this good-faith effort, Democrats in both the House and Senate “reneged” on the agreement at the eleventh hour.
The Speaker argued that by cutting off resources to the very agencies that protect our borders and mitigate disasters, the opposition is creating a “painful and unnecessary” crisis during a particularly vulnerable time for the nation.

The timing of the funding lapse is especially critical. Johnson highlighted that FEMA is currently stretched thin by historic winter storms slamming the East Coast, while TSA agents and border personnel are being forced to work without pay in high-stress roles.
He also underscored the heightened stakes for the Secret Service, citing a fresh armed attempt on the President’s life just this past weekend as proof that the agency cannot afford to be underfunded.
Looking toward the remainder of 2026, Johnson reminded the public that the United States is preparing for its 250th birthday and the massive logistical undertaking of hosting the FIFA World Cup in 11 cities. He argued that the “gambit” being played by Democrats isn’t just a budget dispute—it’s a threat to the planning and security required for these historic events.
“This is not a game,” Johnson told reporters, calling the move as “foolish as it is dangerous.” He urged Democrats to stop blocking critical funding and do their jobs before the safety of the American public is further compromised.
The press conference, which began with a celebration of America’s gold-medal-winning Olympic hockey teams, ended with a firm demand for a return to the bipartisan deal originally on the table.
