US House Speaker Mike Johnson expressed strong support on Monday for President Donald Trump’s ongoing efforts to overhaul federal agencies, including FEMA, and crack down on immigration enforcement policies during a press briefing.

Speaking after a House Republican meeting with the president, Johnson underscored the importance of making the federal government more accountable and efficient, echoing Trump’s call for a comprehensive reassessment of FEMA’s role in disaster response and recovery.

Johnson, who hails from disaster-prone Louisiana, highlighted his state’s experience in handling emergencies and expressed frustration with FEMA’s leadership over the past four years. He praised state-level emergency preparedness efforts, citing Louisiana’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness (GOHSEP) as a model of efficiency.

“In my experience, local workers do a good job, but the leadership at the top can significantly affect how disasters are managed,” Johnson stated. “President Trump’s task force to reassess FEMA’s operations is a much-needed step, and we in the House will provide our full support to ensure it is handled effectively.”

He emphasized that FEMA’s role is under intense scrutiny as the administration aims to improve disaster response and eliminate bureaucratic inefficiencies.

On the topic of immigration, Johnson reiterated support for President Trump’s firm stance on border security and enforcement, particularly regarding deportation flights and foreign cooperation. He referenced Trump’s recent measures against Colombia and hinted at similar actions toward Venezuela, accusing the Biden administration of opening borders to “dangerous persons.”

“President Trump is taking a heavy-handed approach, and we support him in ensuring that our borders are secure and that other nations comply with repatriation efforts,” Johnson said.

He also criticized California’s policies related to immigration, arguing that federal aid should be conditioned on states adopting stricter enforcement measures.

Johnson confirmed reports that President Trump intends to replace key inspector generals across federal agencies to eliminate “fraud, waste, and abuse.” He argued that new leadership is necessary to bring a fresh perspective to federal oversight and to align with Trump’s goals of increasing efficiency and accountability.

“Sometimes you need fresh eyes and new voices to root out inefficiencies and mismanagement,” Johnson remarked, adding that House Republicans are committed to working closely with the administration on this initiative.

He reiterated the House GOP’s commitment to supporting Trump’s efforts to streamline government operations, strengthen border security, and hold federal agencies accountable.

“This is a new moment for us to reevaluate everything the federal government does,” Johnson stated. “President Trump is making good on his promise to put America first, and we in the House are here to help make that happen.”

The House is expected to begin discussions on potential legislative measures supporting FEMA reforms and immigration enforcement initiatives in the coming weeks.
