President Donald J. Trump has chosen William J. Pulte to serve as the nation’s Acting Director of National Intelligence. This appointment comes shortly after Tulsi Gabbard announced she is leaving the position to care for her husband, Abraham Williams, following his recent diagnosis with a rare form of bone cancer.
Gabbard shared her resignation news last month, explaining she could not keep up with the heavy demands of the intelligence role while helping her husband fight his illness. Her departure left a sudden vacancy at the top of the country’s intelligence network.
Pulte is currently the Director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency. He also holds the title of Chairman for both Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. According to the official release, he will continue to lead these housing finance organizations while he takes on his new responsibilities in the intelligence community.
The President pointed to Pulte’s background in handling large-scale financial operations as a major factor in the decision. In his announcement, Trump stated that Pulte brings “deep experience managing the most sensitive matters in America, the safety and soundness of the Markets, and over 10 Trillion Dollars at Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac.”
Trump also noted in the statement that the $10 trillion mark is “a substantial increase from where it was just 12 months ago.”
The announcement ended with a brief message from the President, reading, “Congratulations to Director Pulte!”
