Amid all the tragedy, anguish, and divisiveness it has caused for the past two years, COVID-19 has been hugely profitable for some.
Pharmaceutical giants Pfizer and Moderna, for example, have reaped in the cash. CNN reported last November, for example, that Pfizer, in the third quarter of 2021, reported that both revenue and earnings were up by more than 130 percent over the same period of 2020. Yet Pfizer’s non-vaccine business grew by just 7 percent.
In Houston, Dr. Mary Bowden wants to find out how profitable the pandemic has been for Houston Methodist Hospital, which suspended her.
Bowden recently announced that she was suing the hospital to gain access to its financial records. As the medical news website MedPage Today reported, with the lawsuit Bowden is “implying that the hospital may have generated revenue from its vaccination program.”
Bowden also seeks retribution.
Last year Bowden, an ear, nose, and throat specialist, began questioning the effectiveness and safety of the vaccines.
She openly discussed on social media her efforts to treat patients with ivermectin. Bowden announced she would see only unvaxxed patients. And she also opposed vaccine mandates, after Houston Methodist was one of the first hospitals in America to order that for its staff. In June, 150 hospital employees quit or were fired for refusing to comply.
In November, when it came to Bowden, the hospital said enough. It suspended her privileges at the facility. It accused Bowden of “spreading dangerous information which is not based in science,” and promoting views that “are harmful to the community.” Last month, MedPage chimed in by calling Bowden one of the “worst COVID liars” in the country and lamented that she had not been punished more harshly.
At a press conference last week announcing her lawsuit, Bowden noted, “How many of your fully vaccinated employees are having breakthrough cases, and of the 2,879 patients that have died in your hospitals, how many of them were refused early treatment?”
“Financially, we have a lot of questions: How much have your executives profited from the COVID windfall? Do you have any financial relationships with the vaccine companies? How much are you making from the vaccines?” she added, according to media accounts.
Sounding almost like radical left-winger Sen. Bernie Sanders, who was a Big Pharma critic until the left adopted the vaccines as the path out of pandemic, Bowden added, “Medical freedom has been hijacked by hospitals, big pharma, insurance companies, and the federal agencies.”
“I want to make this clear, I’m not seeking any financial gains from this or personal gain,” she said. “I’m simply seeking the truth, which we all deserve.”
Bowden pointed out that the public should be told how much the hospital’s assets have grown during the pandemic, how much its top brass are paid, and how much was paid out in bonuses.
Bowden said that in 2019 Houston Methodist claimed assets of $4 billion.
A watchdog group called Nonprofit Light now says the hospital’s assets are right at $5 billion.
