On Tuesday, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said that Vladimir Putin ‘is prepared to use barbaric and indiscriminate tactics against innocent civilians’ in Ukraine, but stressed he was convinced the Russian president ‘will fail’.
Diplomats representing their countries in the United Nations walked out of a meeting Tuesday in protest as a response to a speech given by a Russian official attempting to justify the country’s military aggression toward Ukraine.
Over 140 U.N. diplomats walked out of a meeting where Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov spoke through a pre-recorded message to the U.N. Human Rights Council and others on disarmament in an effort to justify Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
On Monday, Ukraine’s ambassador to the U.S., Oksana Markarova, told reporters at the U.S. Capitol that during Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the former country used a vacuum bomb, in violation of international law, Reuters reported.
A thermobaric weapon, aerosol bomb, fuel-air explosive, or vacuum bomb is a type of explosive that uses oxygen from the surrounding air to generate a high-temperature explosion. In practice, the blast wave typically produced by these weapons lasts significantly longer than that of a conventional condensed explosive.
A Human Rights Watch report of 1 February 2000 quotes a study made by the US Defense Intelligence Agency:
“The [blast] kill mechanism against living targets is unique—and unpleasant. … What kills is the pressure wave, and more importantly, the subsequent rarefaction [vacuum], which ruptures the lungs. … If the fuel deflagrates but does not detonate, victims will be severely burned and will probably also inhale the burning fuel. Since the most common FAE fuels, ethylene oxide and propylene oxide, are highly toxic, undetonated FAE should prove as lethal to personnel caught within the cloud as with most chemical agents.
According to a US Central Intelligence Agency study, “the effect of an FAE explosion within confined spaces is immense. Those near the ignition point are obliterated. Those at the fringe are likely to suffer many internal, thus invisible injuries, including burst eardrums and crushed inner ear organs, severe concussions, ruptured lungs, and internal organs, and possibly blindness.”
Another Defense Intelligence Agency document speculates that, because the “shock and pressure waves cause minimal damage to brain tissue … it is possible that victims of FAEs are not rendered unconscious by the blast, but instead suffer for several seconds or minutes while they suffocate”
If it is proven, that Russia is using these weapons against Ukrainian civilians, how many war crimes are needed for the world to take real action.
Perusing through Twitter, it takes only seconds to find horrific images and videos of blatant and disgusting war crimes against civilians.
How many war crimes, how many innocent civilians die before the world takes action.
In January, US President Biden, at a press conference told reporters, “I think what you’re going to see is that Russia will be held accountable if it invades. And it depends on what it does. It’s one thing if it’s a minor incursion and then we end up having a fight about what to do and not do, etc.”
“But if they actually do what they’re capable of doing with the force they’ve massed on the border, it is going to be a disaster for Russia,” said Biden.
Yes, financial sanctions are in place, and Russia has been hit in the pocket, plummeting their currency, as a 40+ mile long Russian convoy inches closer to Kyiv with capabilities to destroy the capital and those remaining to defend their country and civilians.
So I ask again, as I don’t know the answer, how many war crimes, how many innocent civilians die before the world takes action?
