The world’s largest annual public space event, World Space Week (WSW), has officially launched, celebrating science, technology, and humanity’s accelerating journey beyond Earth. Observed annually from October 4 to 10, the celebration this year is anchored by the theme: “Living in Space.”
The United Nations-declared week, which commemorates the 1957 launch of Sputnik 1 and the 1967 signing of the Outer Space Treaty, is focused on the technologies, infrastructure, and human adaptations necessary to establish permanent off-world habitats.
The Dream of Off-World Habitation
The “Living in Space” theme underscores that space settlements—from lunar bases to orbital stations—are no longer the exclusive realm of science fiction. They are becoming active engineering and social challenges. Throughout the week, events worldwide are exploring crucial questions: How will humans sustain themselves on the Moon or Mars?
What breakthroughs are needed in life support, closed-loop agriculture, and radiation shielding? And how will long-duration space missions impact human psychology?
Global Events and Inspiration
Thousands of registered events are taking place in over 90 nations, engaging students, scientists, space enthusiasts, and the general public.
- Online Forums: A global online event titled “Living on the Moon” will feature experts from NASA and industry partners to discuss the design and operation of future lunar habitats.
- Art and Education: The World Space Week 2025 Artwork Mosaic is set to be showcased in a prominent public display, featuring art submissions from around the globe reflecting the ‘Living in Space’ theme. Educational groups, including Crayola and the BBC, have also released free, space-themed learning resources for students.
- Hands-On Activities: Planetariums, museums, and schools are hosting a variety of practical activities, ranging from building model spacecraft and creating solar system models to amateur radio enthusiasts tuning in for a special image transmission event from the International Space Station (ISS).
- Scientific Simulation: The “World’s Biggest Analog,” a coordinated space simulation led by the Austrian Space Forum, will connect multiple habitats worldwide in the largest-ever joint space simulation experiment.
A core goal of World Space Week remains to build the workforce of tomorrow. By providing accessible and engaging activities, organizers hope to inspire the next generation of engineers, scientists, and explorers to pursue STEM careers and contribute to humanity’s future in the cosmos.
With a parade of celestial events—including the Harvest Supermoon and the Draconid Meteor Shower—gracing the night sky this month, the timing is perfect for the world to look up and consider the incredible progress and potential of space exploration.
