Hunt For Hamas Money: Alabama, Kansas Senators Demand Update On Terror Task Force

A group of U.S. Senators is calling for a sit-down with the nation’s top law enforcement officials to find out exactly how the government is dismantling the financial and logistical networks behind Hamas.

Led by Senators Katie Britt of Alabama and Jerry Moran of Kansas, a total of 14 Republican lawmakers sent a formal request to Attorney General Pam Bondi and FBI Director Kash Patel. The group is asking for a comprehensive briefing on the progress made by “Joint Task Force October 7,” a specialized unit dedicated to investigating and prosecuting terrorist organizations and their supporters.

The demand for answers comes as the Senators pointed to a troubling rise in antisemitic violence and extremist rhetoric both in the U.S. and abroad. They argue that tracking down those who fund or facilitate these attacks is vital for national security.

“Ensuring that the perpetrators of this attack are brought to justice is a necessary step in not only upholding the rule of law but protecting American interests,” the Senators wrote in the letter. “We write to express our strong support for the joint task force and to request a congressional briefing on its progress and future priorities.”

Beyond just a status update, the lawmakers are looking for hard numbers. They have asked the Department of Justice and the FBI to disclose how many individuals or entities have been held accountable so far and the total number of active investigations currently on the books.

The letter also suggests that the current laws might not be enough. The Senators asked the task force to provide specific recommendations for new legislation that could help the government better identify support networks and monitor signs of domestic radicalization before they turn into violent acts.

“The events of October 7 underscored the ongoing and evolving nature of the global terrorist threat and the risks it poses to the United States, our allies, and our national security,” the letter continued.

The coalition of Senators signing onto the request includes Mike Crapo, Ted Budd, Kevin Cramer, Ashley Moody, Susan Collins, Rick Scott, Cynthia Lummis, Steve Daines, Shelley Moore Capito, John Hoeven, James Risch, and Marsha Blackburn.

While the briefing has been requested, the Department of Justice has not yet publicly announced a date for when the update will be provided to Congress.
