CLEARWATER, Fla. – A fire that broke out at a Clearwater scrap metal recycling business Friday afternoon serves as a reminder of the potential hazards associated with improper hurricane debris disposal.
Clearwater Fire & Rescue responded to the blaze on Gentry Drive around 12:12 p.m. Officials believe the fire was ignited by appliance debris collected in the wake of recent hurricanes. Due to the nature of the materials involved, the fire is expected to burn for an extended period.

This incident underscores the importance of responsible disposal of hazardous waste.
Where to Dispose of Hazardous Waste:
Pinellas County residents can safely dispose of household chemicals and other hazardous materials at the following locations:
- Household Hazardous Waste Center: 2855 109th Ave. N. in St. Petersburg. Open Tuesdays to Fridays from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., and the first and third Saturday of each month.
- Household Chemical Collection Events: Held at 29582 U.S. 19 N. in Clearwater on select Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Upcoming dates include October 12, October 26, November 23, and December 14.
Important Note: Large lithium-ion batteries from items like cars, lawnmowers, and e-bikes require disposal by a private sector recycling company.
