In a stunning display of rhetorical gymnastics during a Friday congressional hearing, Representative Yassamin Ansari (D-AZ) leveled a severe accusation against American law enforcement, explicitly comparing U.S. immigration policy to the murderous authoritarian regime of Iran.
Speaking before a committee panel that included fellow progressives Ilhan Omar and Pramila Jayapal, the freshman congresswoman was blunt with her assessment. She characterized Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) not as a federal law enforcement agency tasked with upholding national sovereignty, but as a “racist” and “out-of-control” force that is “terrorizing” communities.
“It would be naive for anybody in this country to believe that we are not headed down the exact same direction that authoritarian regimes like Iran… ultimately has gotten to,” Ansari declared.

The comparison is jarring. The Iranian regime, which Ansari noted her own parents fled, is currently infamous for executing dissidents, beating women for improper head coverings, and gunning down protestors in the street. To equate the enforcement of standing federal immigration laws and the deportation of foreign nationals with the systemic slaughter of a nation’s own citizens suggests a profound disconnect from reality.
Ansari went further, labeling the current administration’s efforts to secure the border as nothing less than an “authoritarian takeover of this country.”
The hearing, seemingly designed to spotlight grievances against the Trump administration’s renewed focus on border security, featured testimony from witnesses claiming abuse by ICE agents. Ansari cited anecdotal cases from her district, including a green card holder she claims is being denied medical care, painting a picture of an agency that has “no regard for anyone’s humanity.”

However, the rhetoric employed by the Arizona Democrat strikes a familiar chord in the ongoing battle over the border. By framing standard deportation proceedings—a staple of sovereignty practiced by every nation on Earth—as “state terror,” progressives aim to delegitimize the very concept of border enforcement.
Critics would argue that there is a vast moral canyon between a theocracy that murders women for showing their hair and a republic that repatriates individuals who have entered its territory illegally. Yet, for the left wing of the Democratic party, that distinction is apparently vanishing.
Ansari concluded her remarks by accusing Donald Trump of “purposeful inflammation of unrest,” a charge that seems ironic given the temperature of her own commentary. As the administration moves to restore order to a chaotic immigration system, it appears the opposition is digging in, ready to brand the enforcement of American law as tyranny itself.
