TAMPA, Fla. – A midday shooting investigation is underway in Tampa after a wounded man stumbled into a local food store for help, and the alleged gunman turned himself in just minutes later.

Hillsborough County deputies rushed to the Stop N Save Food Store on Clewis Avenue around 11:30 a.m. Wednesday. Staff at the store had dialed 911 to report that a man had just walked through the front doors, claiming he had been shot.

Emergency responders transported the victim to Tampa General Hospital, but he did not survive his injuries.

As deputies secured the scene, the case took a rapid turn. Less than 30 minutes after the first emergency call, dispatchers received another ring at 11:58 a.m. The person on the other end claimed to be the shooter.

Deputies tracked the caller to a nearby location and took him into custody without further incident.

“This type of violence has no place in our community,” Sheriff Chad Chronister said. “We remain fully committed to keeping our residents safe and will continue working tirelessly to do so.”

Investigators currently view this as an isolated event and do not believe there is a broader threat to the public. Officials are withholding the victim’s name until his family can be properly notified.

The investigation remains active.
