Federal immigration officials have placed a detainer on a Bangladeshi national charged with first-degree murder in the 2025 shooting death of his sister-in-law in Lake County, Florida.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security announced Friday that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement lodged the detainer with the Lake County Jail for Akbor Miah, who also uses the alias Shahidul Islam. The detainer requests that local authorities transfer Miah to federal custody if he is released from local jail.
According to police records, the body of Monica Islam was discovered along a road in Mount Dora in May 2025. Investigators determined she died from a gunshot wound after leaving a Eustis convenience store where she worked alongside Miah.
Detectives reported finding a bullet and the victim’s DNA inside Miah’s vehicle.
Following the homicide, Miah traveled to New York, where U.S. Marshals arrested him on May 6. He was subsequently extradited back to Florida to face the murder charge.
“This illegal alien from Bangladesh has been charged with murder after allegedly shooting his own sister-in-law in Florida,” Acting Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis said in a statement. “He then thought he could evade justice by fleeing to the sanctuary state of New York. Thanks to our law enforcement partners, this criminal illegal alien has been arrested and is off our streets. ICE has lodged a detainer so he can never be loose in our country again.”
Federal immigration records show Miah originally entered the United States in 2016. ICE personnel arrested him in February 2018, and an immigration judge issued a final order of removal later that year in November.
He was deported from the country in January 2019. Records indicate Miah later re-entered the United States illegally and was released by federal authorities on March 19, 2022.
