Florida residents are bracing for a reality check next week as a powerful coastal storm trekking across the Northeast prepares to drag a wave of freezing air into the Sunshine State.
While the Interstate 95 corridor from Washington D.C. to Boston prepares for several inches of “plowable” snow and coastal flooding, the tail end of this weather system is expected to surge south, reaching as far as Central Florida by early Monday and Tuesday.
Forecasters are watching the storm’s progression closely, noting that the system will organize over the Gulf Coast on Saturday before gaining strength as it moves up the Atlantic. While the heaviest snow—potentially up to 26 inches in isolated spots of New England—remains a northern concern, the cold front trailing the storm is robust enough to challenge daily record low temperatures across the Florida peninsula.
The cooling trend marks a dramatic shift for Floridians. Experts suggest the drop in mercury could be significant enough to cause cold-stunned iguanas to lose their grip on palm trees, a phenomenon seen during the state’s most intense cold snaps.
Despite the looming chill, the agricultural outlook remains relatively stable. Experts currently indicate that the risk of frost or freeze damage to the state’s vital citrus crops remains low, though farmers are keeping a close watch on the overnight lows.
Travelers should also prepare for a “ripple effect” at local airports. Even though Florida won’t see a flake of snow, major hubs like Orlando, Miami, and Tampa could face significant delays or cancellations as the storm hammers Northeast transit centers on Sunday and Monday. Strong coastal winds and beach erosion are also expected to impact the Atlantic side of the Southeast as the storm intensifies offshore.
Once the storm clears the coast, the cold air is expected to settle in through the early part of the week. Residents are encouraged to monitor local forecasts as the timing of the front determines just how low the thermometers will dip.
