A traffic stop in Custer County, Oklahoma, ended with a massive drug seizure and federal charges for a 31-year-old Mexican national. Jose Carlos Morales-Gutierrez, who is in the United States illegally, is now facing a potential life sentence after authorities allegedly discovered more than 20 pounds of methamphetamine hidden in his semi-truck.
The incident began on March 11, 2026, when an Oklahoma Highway Patrol trooper pulled over a red semi-truck pulling a trailer. According to court documents, the trooper stopped the vehicle and identified the driver as Morales-Gutierrez, who did not have a valid driver’s license.
During the encounter, a K9 unit was brought to the scene and alerted officers to the presence of drugs within the trailer. A subsequent search of the vehicle turned up a duffel bag stuffed with over 20 pounds of meth.
On March 17, 2026, U.S. Attorney Robert J. Troester announced that Morales-Gutierrez had been formally charged by federal complaint with possession of 500 grams or more of methamphetamine with the intent to distribute it.

The legal stakes for the defendant are high; if a jury finds him guilty, he could face a maximum penalty of life in federal prison and a fine reaching $10,000,000.
The investigation was a joint effort between the Oklahoma Highway Patrol and the FBI Oklahoma City Field Office. Assistant U.S. Attorney Bow Bottomly has been assigned to prosecute the case.
While the charges are serious, federal officials reminded the public that the complaint is only an allegation. Morales-Gutierrez is presumed innocent under the law unless evidence proves his guilt beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
