TAMPA, Fla. – A 22-year-old man faces up to eight years in federal prison after admitting he fought off immigration agents during an attempted arrest in August, an altercation that resulted in serious injury to a federal officer.

U.S. Attorney Gregory W. Kehoe announced that Denis Napoleon Corea-Miranda, a national of Nicaragua, has pleaded guilty to forcibly resisting, opposing, or impeding federal officers. A date for his sentencing has not yet been scheduled.

According to court filings, the incident took place on August 26, 2025. Agents with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) attempted to detain Corea-Miranda to execute a final order of removal from the United States.

Authorities say Corea-Miranda attempted to flee while being questioned, triggering a prolonged physical struggle. Court records indicate that during the scuffle, Corea-Miranda managed to get on top of the officers and hold them against the ground. One ICE agent suffered a dislocated shoulder during the fight.

Corea-Miranda initially escaped the scene on foot but was subsequently located and arrested by deputies from the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.

The case was investigated by HSI, ICE Enforcement Removal Operations, and the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.

It is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Jeff Chang as part of “Operation Take Back America,” a Department of Justice initiative targeting transnational criminal organizations and illegal immigration.
