Illinois Man Dead After Medical Episode Leads To St. Petersburg Crash

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – A morning drive in St. Petersburg turned fatal on Monday when a medical emergency behind the wheel caused a single-vehicle wreck on 34th Street North.

Witnesses first spotted a red Jeep Compass Trailhawk SUV driving erratically at approximately 9:20 a.m. According to investigators, the vehicle was weaving through northbound traffic in the 1200 block of 34th Street North.

The SUV eventually veered off the roadway, striking a street sign at the intersection of 14th Avenue North before finally coming to a rest in a driveway at 1390 34th St. N.

The St. Petersburg Police Department identified the driver as 78-year-old Ralph Locke of Chicago, Illinois.

First responders rushed Locke to Orlando Health Bayfront Hospital, but medical staff were unable to save him. He was pronounced deceased shortly after arrival.

Preliminary findings from the scene indicate that Locke suffered a “medical event” while driving, which led to the loss of vehicle control.

Police confirmed that no other cars were involved in the incident and no bystanders were injured during the SUV’s path off the road. While the immediate cause appears to be health-related, authorities noted that the investigation remains ongoing.
