Illinois Mom Faces Felony Charges After Opening Fire To Stop Attack On Son

A Tuesday afternoon trip to a Rockford gas station ended in a shooting and the arrest of a 48-year-old mother who claims she was defending her son from an ambush. Monica Moore now faces felony charges following the March 31 incident in the 2200 block of Charles Street.

The chaos began around 5:00 p.m. while Moore was driving her son to a friend’s house. According to court documents, Moore pulled into the gas station and remained in her vehicle while her son went inside.

Investigators say she watched as another car pulled up and two individuals followed her son into the store, where they immediately attacked him.

Authorities report that Moore grabbed a 9mm handgun from her car and ran toward the entrance. Surveillance footage captured a tense struggle at the storefront; one of the attackers allegedly held the door shut to block Moore from entering while the second person continued to beat her son inside.

Investigators said that Moore managed to force the door open and fired her weapon. The bullet struck one of the assailants in the leg. Immediately after the shot was fired, the fight ended.

Moore left the scene with her son, dropped him off at his original destination, and then called the police from her home to report what had happened.

The man who was shot was treated at a local hospital and underwent surgery for his injuries. However, police noted that the victim was entirely uncooperative with the investigation, refusing to name his shooter or press any charges against Moore.

Despite the uncooperative victim and Moore’s claim of intervention, Rockford police charged her with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and aggravated battery for the discharge of a firearm. She was taken into custody and booked into the Winnebago County Jail.
