In A Signal To The Left, University Of Nebraska Tosses Mascot’s Hand Signal

In Nebraska, one might think that signaling the “OK” sign might reveal a dreaded Oklahoma Sooners fan.

But the University of Nebraska has taken a different outlook.

The university recently revised its cartoon mascot’s long-standing “OK” hand gesture – a circle made with thumb and index finger with the other three fingers extended – so it won’t be confused with promoting white supremacy.

Instead, Herbie Husker will now just signal that Nebraska is No. 1 – although that’s is not very realistic either, since the Cornhuskers, at least in college football, have not been No. 1 since 1995.

Credit where credit is due, however. Nebraska is the NCAA’s defending champs in bowling.

Herbie had flashed fans and opponents the OK sign for almost 50 years, according to The Washington Times.

But in the woke universe we now inhabit, that is forbidden.

“That hand gesture could, in some circles, represent something that does not represent what Nebraska athletics is about,” Lonna Henrichs, the school’s athletics licensing director, told the local media.

“We just didn’t even want to be associated with portraying anything that somebody might think, you know, that it means White power.”

Yet, as with most of the left’s boogeymen, the hand sign exists only in the minds of those who wish it were so.

The Times quoted the Anti-Defamation League, which has led the charge to pin the white supremacist label on those who dare signal OK.

And, according to the group, context matters.

“Someone who uses the symbol cannot be assumed to be using the symbol in either a trolling or, especially, white supremacist context unless other contextual evidence exists to support the contention,” the ADL’ website says, the Times reports.

“Since 2017, many people have been falsely accused of being racist or white supremacist for using the ‘okay’ gesture in its traditional and innocuous sense.”
