A Florida man is behind bars after a woman woke up to a startling discovery: a stranger standing at the foot of her bed. The surreal encounter took a stranger turn when the homeowner later found the alleged intruder, Elijah Earl Spencer, asleep in the back seat of her car.

Just before 5:30 AM on Tuesday, Walton County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrived at a home on Andrews Road in DeFuniak Springs, following a 911 call. The homeowner told them she woke to find a man, who appeared to be disoriented, mumbling in her bedroom.

After she yelled at him, the man left her home and wandered around her property before vanishing.

A quick check revealed the man had left behind articles of clothing and helped himself to some of her prepackaged snacks, leaving an empty container outside. The woman’s search for missing items led her to her car, where she found the suspect, 40-year-old Elijah Earl Spencer, passed out in the back seat.

Deputies were able to remove Spencer from the vehicle after he refused to follow their commands. He was arrested and charged with several offenses, including burglary of an occupied dwelling, burglary of an unoccupied conveyance, and resisting an officer without violence.

Spencer remains in custody at the Walton County Jail on a $5,000 bond.
