Investigation Underway After Hillsborough County Inmate Found Unresponsive In Jail Cell Dies

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. – Hillsborough County detectives have opened an investigation following the death of a 34-year-old inmate who was discovered unresponsive inside the Falkenburg Road Jail last week.

Nathan Holmberg was found by jail staff on March 30, 2026, prompting an emergency transport to Tampa General Hospital. After four days in medical care, Holmberg was pronounced dead at 10:14 p.m. on April 3, 2026.

While the Medical Examiner’s Office is still working to determine the official cause of death, preliminary reports from the Sheriff’s Office suggest the incident was a suicide. Holmberg’s next of kin have been notified of his passing as the investigation into the jailhouse death continues.

Holmberg had been in custody for less than two weeks prior to the incident.

He was booked into the Hillsborough County Jail on March 25, 2026, facing heavy charges including two counts of Lewd or Lascivious Molestation involving a victim under 12 and two counts of Promotion of a Sexual Performance by a Child.

The legal troubles surrounding Holmberg were extensive and spanned multiple jurisdictions. The charges in Hillsborough County were the result of a larger investigation that began in Hernando County, where detectives reportedly found evidence on a cell phone linked to crimes dating back to 2018.

At the time of his death, Holmberg was also awaiting a grand jury indictment in Pinellas County involving an additional 47 counts related to child sexual abuse material.

The Sheriff’s Office has not released further details regarding the circumstances of how Holmberg was discovered, citing the ongoing nature of the investigation.
