An American Apache helicopter was shot down over the Strait of Hormuz on Monday night, prompting an immediate vow of retaliation from the White House.
President Donald J. Trump announced the incident Tuesday on social media, stating that the aircraft was hit during a routine patrol. Both crew members aboard the helicopter survived the crash without injury.
“I have just been informed by our Great Military that last night the Iranians shot down one of our highly sophisticated Apache Helicopters while patrolling over the Strait of Hormuz,” Trump posted. “There were two pilots involved, both are safe and uninjured.”
The Strait of Hormuz is a vital international shipping lane located between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman, handling roughly one-fifth of the world’s petroleum liquids. U.S. military forces frequently patrol the area to ensure open commercial transit.
While the exact nature of the weapon used to down the aircraft remains unconfirmed by military officials, the administration has placed direct responsibility on Iranian forces. The downing marks a significant escalation in a region that has long seen friction between U.S. naval and air assets and Iran’s military.
The White House indicated that military or strategic actions are currently being assessed in response to the downing of the aircraft.
“Nevertheless, the United States must, of necessity, respond to this attack,” Trump stated. “Thank you for your attention to this matter!”
Iranian officials have not yet issued a formal response regarding the downing or the subsequent statements from the U.S. administration.
